This church is located to the south of the Quinchao Island, in the Matao Bay. Its construction dates back, apparently, to the end of the 18th century and is characterized by its austere façade, covered entirely by larch shingles. These are the original material, which is still visible in various sectors of the church.
Located at the south of the Quinchao Island, in the Matao Bay, the ‘Nuestra Señora del Amparo’ of Matao Chapel is located in the centre of a large esplanade, meters from the beach, next to the town cemetery and facing a wooded hill. As the toponymy of its name indicates, the chono suffix ‘ao(au)‘ refers to the existence of an important cove or bay. Like other churches on the same island such as Nuestra Señora de Gracia de Villa Quinchao, the construction of the Matao chapel possibly dates back to the end of the 18th century, in the context of the circular mission and as a way of providing religious spaces to the communities in the south of the Quinchao Island.
