The 147 ft wooden steamer Indiana built in 1848 had mechanical problems, blew a shaft seal and sank in 1858 off Crisp Point near Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior. The crew and passengers made it to shore in a life boat. Her machinery was recovered in 1978-79 and now resides at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. It is reputedly the oldest marine engine existing that was built in North America. The sponsons, which are the flared overhanging sides of her deck are still in place on the port side. This feature is similar construction to the side-wheelers. The model was made from 1338 30 Megapixel images. Note the Lake Superior wrecks don’t have the mussels which coat most of the wrecks in the lower lakes.
