The Iwaki City Museum of Coal and Fossils houses exhibits on the history of coal mines, fossils excavated in the city, and more. In 1968, a local high school student discovered a fossil of a plesiosaur (Futabasaurus) in Iwaki, a find of great value to paleontology in Japanese. The work “Doraemon: Nobita’s Dinosaur” by Japanese comics artist Fujiko F. Fujio ” introduces a plesiosaur named Piisuke, modeled after the fossil from Iwaki. Many whale, ammonite, and other fossils excavated in the city are also on exhibit.
In 1856, a coalfield was discovered in Iwaki.Large-scale coal mine development was subsequently carried out in neighboring areas until 1976, contributing significantly to Japan’s energy industry. An exhibit reproduces the equipment and mine interior of that time.
