These are the nine Megalonyx fossils sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 1700s. This particular arrangement of the numbered hand is from an illustration adapted by Tom Dunne from a drawing by Dennis Murphy of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The numbered hand is directly adapted from the illustration while the nine fossils were 3-D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelpha on March 9 and 10, 2020. Courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences.
A copy of the illustration used as part of this model and a lively article about these fossils can be found here: Thompson, Keith (2011) Jefferson’s Old Bones. American Scientist 99:200-203. Electronic document, https://www.americanscientist.org/article/jeffersons-old-bones, accessed March 17, 2020.
