John Nicolson (1843-1934) was a Caithness farmer and talented artist. He was very interested in local history and acted as site foreman for Sir Francis Tress Barry excavating many archaeological sites in Caithness. On some of the archaeological sites a viewing platform was constructed from excavated stone, some of these were adorned with stone sculptures carved by John Nicolson. Nybster Broch was just across the fields from Nicholsons house, there are many of his sculptures in the area but Mervyn’s Tower (the viewing platform for the broch) is one of his best creations. Over the years many sculptures from the tower have been stolen, the tower itself was moved in the 1980s to just outside the broch site – it maybe at this time some of the sculptures were disfigured with strong cement.
