More model informationJulius Sundblom (1865–1944) was a political from Åland and a businessman. He is best known for his role in Åland’s struggle for autonomy from Finland in the early 20th century. During the time around Finland’s independence and afterwards, he played a pivotal role in advocating for Åland to reunite with Sweden. However, in 1921, the League of Nations decided that Åland should remain a part of Finland but with extensive cultural and political autonomy. Sundblom was a prominent figure in Ålandic politics, and his efforts helped shape Åland’s unique status within Finland.
