Cychwynodd y jwgiau Bellarmine yn yr Iseldiroedd o ganol yr 16ed ganrif. Tybir bod y delweddau arnynt yn gwawdio’r Cardinal Robert Bellarmine a oedd yn wrthwynebydd chwyrn i’r Eglwys Ddiwygiedig yr Iseldiroedd. Darganfuwyd y jwg yma ger y Twr Gorllewinol Eglwys Gadeiriol Bangor yn 1874. Mae rhai’n cynnwys tystiolaeth o ddewiniaeth fel wrin ac esgyrn anifeiliaid a byddent wedi’u selio cyn cael eu claddu.
Bellarmine jugs originated in the Netherlands in the mid 16th century. They are thought to be mocking depictions of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine who was a bitter opponent of the Dutch Reformed Church. This jug was found in 1874 near the base of the West Tower, Bangor Cathedral. Some contain evidence of witchcraft such as urine and animal bones which would be sealed before being buried.
