Medieval nave and chancel parish church ruins (TN009-003001-) in the townland of Kilbarron (Cill Bharráin/Church of Barran/Bairrfhionn), Diocese of Killaloe, Barony of Lower Ormond, Co. Tipperary. Multi-period church ruins standing in the centre of a graveyard (TN009-003002-) enclosed by a post-1700 stone wall with possible partial remains of the ecclesiastical enclosure of an Early Christian monastery. The church was named after Bairrfhionn [fair headed], a sixth century saint, whose feast-day falls on the 21st of May. According to local tradition ‘Kilbarron Abbey’ was built on the site of a monastery. In 1302 the medieval parish church of ‘Kilbarrayn’ (Kilbarron) with vicarage was valued at 3 marks per annum in the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Killaloe. In 1463, a papal letter mentions the presence of Thomas O’Cormacan, parish vicar of ‘Cyllwarayn’ [Kilbarron].
