More model informationThe Baptismal Font (KD037-017021-) from the medieval church ruin at Kilkea Castle, Kilkea, Co. Kildare.
Externally the font is octagonal in form and tapers from about halfway down its height. This was presumably designed to be supported by an octagonal shaft and base. Internally the font has a deep spherical basin that drains through a whole in one of the sides. Apart from its octagonal form, there is no decorative carving.
A Provincial Synod held at Christ Church, Dublin, in 1189, stipulated that “an immovable font” with a drain should be provided for baptisms in parish churches. It is assumed that most of the large stone fonts with drains date to shortly after this synod.

Hi, thanks for the positive feedback and the reminder to including the SMR number. I normally include them but obviously overlooked it here, and yes you are correct, it is KD037-017021-.
I've checked out your Sketchfab account and you have an impressive amount of monuments documented. Great work! I've also documented a couple of the monuments from St Mullin's on my other account, sketchfab.com/Sean_Sourke/models. This account 'Kildare_Heritage' is just for Co. Kildare monuments. For a long time I've been hoping to document the medieval font of St. David's COI, in Naas. When I do I'll send you a link in the comments of one of the Kilkenny fonts, as I think you will be interested in the similarity in their form and appearance.
Would be good to have the SMR no in the description: KD037-017021-, I think. Lovely model!
