Lead seal embossed with the East India Company brand and the date 1804 on one side, and the inscription 3G on the rear. 3G may relate to a specific consignment or location where it was checked or stored. The number 4 above the EIC logo is known as the ‘sign of four’ and is a holy sign originating from Roman Christianity and the Greek for the first two letters of Christ. Cloth was one of the most expensive consignments the EIC carried and some of the other symbols may represent a makers, or merchants mark to establish legal ownership.
