The Leireabhagh peninsula is situated to the South of Lochmaddy centre. There is but one occupied house there now, but historically has been under settlement and agricultural use for many centuries, with some features dating back potentially to Neolithic times when much of the coastal shoreline would have been freshwater loch(s) shores
These substantial structures are boat mooring stations for the safe day-to-day mooring of boats. They resemble nausts which are normally for safe storage of boats whe not in use. There have been channesl excavated into the loch-bed to allow easier passage into the mooring and offloading area. In times of storms, the boats would be lifted out of their mooring aras and upturned on the grassy area above.
Given that there is no road accss to the farm, only footpaths, most day to day goods would be collected or delivered by boat from Lochmaddy, across the bay.
