This chess set is a mod I added to the game Medieval Engineers, using scans from some of the 12th Century Lewis Chessmen. I created a custom chess table to play them on. For more info, see the chess pieces in action at: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=824928016
The original scans (by “Scan the World” https://www.myminifactory.com/object/the-lewis-chessmen-at-the-national-museum-of-scotland-20752) were about 700,000 polygons each. That would be too much in-game, so I baked the original texture in, then heavily “decimated” the chess pieces down to about 3,500 polygons each, then reapplied the baked texture on the new low-poly meshes. It largely worked, though if you get close you can see some of the imperfections. Still, I’m pleased how well these pieces look after being chopped to 1/200 their original size!
