The Lilly Library of Indiana University Bloomington is one of the premier special-collections libraries in the United States. Ralph Gilbert’s murals, completed and installed in June of 2021, were commissioned through the Lilly Library Bicentennial Murals Project, an international competition funded by the Lilly Endowment. They are a partial representation of the library’s rich resources in world literature, history, the sciences, children’s literature, and the arts, and honor the legacy of J. K. Lilly, Jr. whose remarkable private library of books and manuscripts formed the nucleus of the Lilly Library collections.
