More model informationThe lime kiln lies on the western slopes of West Allendale above River West Allen, near the Miners’ Rest, on the way to Smallburns and close to Carshield Mine. Lime kilns were constructed to convert limestone to quicklime by burning it at high temperature. Quicklime was used to in construction for mortar, plaster and limewash, as well as farming to reduce soil acidity.
This 3D model has been created by volunteers as part of the National Landscape’s Land of Lead and Silver project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England.
