Lime Kiln, New Hall, Chelmsford, Essex

This structure, excavated at New Hall, Chelmsford, Essex, was probably a flare kiln i.e. one used intermittently not continuously, to make lime mortar. It dates from the 16th century and was probably associated with the construction of Henry VIII’s Palace of Beaulieu. The surviving kiln structure measured almost 2m across. Further analysis of the bricks from this structure will help us to learn more about what it was used for and when.
