In comparison to other remote sensing methods, the crucial advantage of laser-scanning technology is that it can document the topographic structure below the canopy and in narrow street canyons (e.g., Liu 2008). Topography is a crucial information for designing cities with considerations that include airflow, water and transportation. This animated point cloud model of Ljubljana clearly shows the topographic structure that determines the old city centre built around the river Ljubljanica. The restoration of the the banks was rewarded in 2012 with the European Prize for Urban Public Space.
