According to Bob Hayes (personal communication, 27 June 2022): “This is a remnant of a log-constructed boat found on the bank of the Nansemond River in downtown Suffolk, VA and recovered by the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society in 2017. The remnant, measuring over 14 feet in length, represents at least three logs pinned together with iron pins. Unique to the remnant is the wineglass stern, which has a hole bored through, most likely to accommodate the shaft of a propeller. The actual size, number of logs, and age of the vessel is not known. Preliminary wood analysis indicates the boat was constructed from bald cypress. Tidewater-area boatbuilders of the early 20th century often constructed powered log-bottom boats. Whether this feature was part of the original construction or added later as a modification is not known. The remnant is currently housed at the Riddick’s Folly House Museum, Suffolk, VA.”
