The Lough Kinale Shrine is the earliest and largest Irish book shrine, dating to the 9th century. It was found in a lake in Co. Longford in 1986, close to a Crannóg (island settlement). The shrine had been take apart in antiquity to remove the manuscript within. It comprises an oak box covered with tinned-bronze plates. The cover is decorated in the same manner as a ‘carpet page’ from an early medieval Irish Gospel book. Digital 3D scanning enabled the shrine to be reconstructed without having to physically handle the components.
