Memorial against war and fascism on Helmut-Zilk-Platz in Vienna. The memorial by Alred Hrdlicka consists of several elements. The “Gate of Violence” thematizes the victims of National Socialist persecution in concentration camps and prisons in the left-hand sculpture, “Hinterlandsfront”, while the right-hand group of figures depicts the death of soldiers at the front. With the figure of the “Street-Washing Jew”, Hrdlicka symbolized the anti-Semitic violence in Vienna in March 1938, when Jews were forced by National Socialists to clean the streets of pro-Austrian slogans with brushes. Hrdlicka related the figure “Orpheus enters Hades” to the bomb victims in the cellars of the Philipphof (former building on this site). The ensemble ends with the “Stone of the Republic” (not in the 3D model).
