This is my 3rd scan of “Major the Bull” - a large sculpture cast in bronze by Liberty Arts artists Leah Foushee and Mike Waller in the heart of Downtown Durham, NC. This iconic sculpture is the defacto city mascot in the minds of many Durhamites.
Initially, I conducted several separate photo sessions to produce the 1st scan. I processed it in Metashape and used a small amount of displacement based on the texture luminosity to retrieve some of the finer details in Zbrush.
I revisited it again in June 2020 when it was covered in chalk during the protests that occurred that summer. That version is here: https://skfb.ly/6ZpOX The chalk aided the photogrammetry process and ultimately produced better overall geometry, however it precluded using the texture luminosity to recapture the finer details of the sculpture.
In this version, I’ve remapped the original photos onto the improved June 2020 model in order to pull the subtle expressions and texture variations back into the actual geometry of the sculpture.
