At the time, filter cigarettes were mainly for women, so there was a red band around the filter to hide lipstick marks. The filter was called “Beauty Tips to Keep the Paper from Your Lips” [3] [4].
In the 1950s, there were scientific studies proving the existence of a connection between smoking and lung cancer. The Philip Morris company decided to reorient the Marlboro brand to men who care about their health. An active advertising campaign has been launched, which claims that cigarettes with a filter are much safer than without it.
