Maliku of Palmyra, sculpture from the ancient city state of Palmyra in Syria in the National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh)
An Aramaic inscription on the left shoulder identifies this funerary relief with the name of Maliku. Such portraits were partof the elaborate tomb system in the ancient city state of Palmyra, Syria. They were used to seal the underground compartments in wich the bodies were buried. With its key position on the trading caravan routes, Palmyra had considerable wealth and sophistication, reflected in its commemoration of the dead.
