Dr. E. L. Packard, who taught paleontology at Oregon State College from 1932-1950, donated this fossilized mammoth femur to the Horner Museum. It is now part of the artifact collection at Benton County Museum in Philomath, Oregon. It measures about 31” wide.
Dr. Packard began teaching paleontology at Oregon State University (then Oregon State College) in 1932, was chair of the department 1932-1950, and was the first to hold the office of Dean of the College of Science (1932-1938). His research focused on Mesozoic and Cenozoic (250-2 million years ago), mostly marine animals.
Mammoth were essentially extinct in North America around 10,000 years ago. There is much controversy about the nature of their extinction - people/climate/disease (from people)/combination thereof.
