More model informationThis model belongs to a Mbuye mask from the Pende. Its typology is characterized by the geometrization of shapes, a triangular face, a more or less flat nose, prominent eyebrows and marked, sharp teeth. Among the Pende, when a mask is created, what counts is the song. Once the lyrics and music are created, the costume is created and then the sculptor creates the wooden mask. Finally, a choreography corresponding to the character is developed. Traditionally, African Mbuye masks were danced during the mukanda, the initiation that takes young people from puberty to adulthood. This mask was photogrammetrized by Artmonite on a trip to Uganda in 2023.
