MEK 24430 Jan Wnęk`s wings3D Model
20th century reconstruction of the Jan Wnęk`s wings.
Jan Wnęk Jan Wnęk was a sculptor and designer. He was born in 1828 in the village of Kaczówka near Dąbrowa Tarnowska. He gained recognition as a sculptor thanks to collaboration with Rev. Stanisław Morgensztern, a parson in Odporyszów. He was also known as Ikar znad Dunajca [Icarus from the banks of the river Dunajec]. Compelled by a dream to fly like a bird, he constructed a glider of his own design in 1866. Reportedly, in the presence of numerous witnesses, he jumped multiple times from the 45-meter-tall bell tower in Odporyszów and soared like today’s paraglider pilots. Unfortunately, on 10 June 1869, on the day of Pentecost, Wnęk made his last flight. As a result of a drop from the bell tower, the heavily injured sculptor died soon after.
