It is best known for its 3-storey interior gallery, covered with a glass roof that resembles a lantern.
The construction of the building was ordered by the merchant of the first guild Moisey Mendelevich. The architect team consisted of the builders Lev Wlodek and Tovy Fischer, and the sculptor Samuel Milman.
The passage was opened in 1900. It was a prototype of a shopping centre, equipped with the latest technology - it had electric lighting, steam heating, telephones and an elevator.
