More model informationBIRUG 10070 is a specimen of the fish Mene rhombea from the Eocene epoch (~56–34 million years ago). This species is well known from localities in northern Italy, which represents the fauna of the north-western arm of the (then shrinking and largely tropical) Tethys Sea.
The ecology of this species has been predicted with some confidence as one species from the same genus remains alive today – Mene maculata. Due to similar feeding morphology in the fossil species (a small, upward-turned mouth) this species is inferred to have been a planktivore.
This specimen was digitised using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by Courtney Szanto and Andrew Jones.
