More model informationCretaceous sandstone sampled from the Mesa Verde Group near Durango, Colorado. The dark red/orange layers are called Liesegang Banding, and are formed by the precipitation of iron-rich minerals out of groundwater moving through the sediment after it was deposited. The interruption in the bands near the top of the rock is called a dewatering structure. It formed as the load of the overlying sediment caused fluids to escape upwards.
