Michelangelo’s “Young Archer” was hiding in plane view for almost an entire century. Currently on loan, and being exhibited at the Metropolitian Museum of Art, this diminutive archer was quietly living at the corner of 5th Ave and East 75th Street, that is, the French Embassy. It did not have a concrete identity until an art historian named Kathleen Brandt attended an art opening at the Embassy in 1995 and became transfived with the three-foot statue. Her research, and that of several other scholars and experts confimed its provenance in 1996. It is considered one of Michelangelo’s earlier works, that is, he probably completed it as a teenager. If you take a look at the annotations, you’ll find out more about why art historians are convinced this is a young Michelagelo’s work.
