“Military Courage” is a copy of the original, on the “Cenotaph of General Jucault de Lamoricière” in Nantes Cathedral. Paul Dubois, a French sculptor and painter, produced both statues within 6 years of each other. The statue located in France was created in 1879 as a part of a larger funerary tomb. The architect was Louis Philippe François Boitte and the sculptor Moisseron, with Dubois being commissioned to execute the four allegorical statues representing Charity, Military Courage, Faith and Wisdom which are positioned at each corner of the monument. “Military Courage” in Baltimore was produced in 1885 and is located in the West Garden, at Mount Vernon Place. It is casted in bronze and is 180 cm × 61 cm × 81 cm (70 in × 24 in × 32 in).

While studying in Italy from 1859 to 1863, Dubois was influenced by Italian Renaissance sculpture. This work was inspired by Michelangelo’s statue from the tomb of Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence.
