I unexpectedly ran across this vase at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in their “Tentacles” exhibit (http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals-and-experiences/exhibits/tentacles). It was accompanied by two other Minoan vases, one on loan from the Met and one without a museum listed. This one is held by the Athens National Museum and dates to the 15th century BC. The style of the vase is called, cleverly, Marine Style. It was the most easily photographed, although there is a big gap in the back where the vase was against a wall. All three vases were in the same glass/plexiglass case. I shot this with my iPhone in 21 photos.

If you have a chance to visit the exhibit, check out the flamboyant cuttlefish - they’re super cool.
