Muness Castle, Unst, Shetland Isles, Scotland.
Muness Castle was built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie, it was attacked and burned in 1627 by French raiders. Some sources suggest the castle was never repaired, while others indicate continued use of the castle and that it was sold by the Bruce family in the 18th Century.
Earthworks to the southwest of the castle (shown in model) of a rectilinear enclosure with internal rectilinear subdivisions represented by low banks has been interpreted to possibly be the remains of a formal garden.
There would have been for further buildings and yards associated with the castle which have not survived, the earthworks could also represent some of these.
