Size: 4 cm
Description: A nodule (or concretion) is a hard, compact mass of mineral matter in the pores of sedimentary or fragmental volcanic rock. In some cases are sedimentary rock with various stages of remineralization, or sedimentary aggregates (sand, mud) cemented with various minerals - calcite, silicate, or iron in processes that make nodule-like masses of odd shapes.
Texturally, nodules are often dense and hard, with a smooth or rough surface texture. The spherical or oblong shape of the nodules is formed by the gradual accumulation of mineral precipitates around a nucleus, which can be anything from a shell fragment to a small rock fragment.
