This sculpture is representative of Lord Shiva’s bull, Nandi. This sculpture dates back to the Vijayanagara period (16th century). The bull is Shiva’s most devout worshipper and is commonly depicted in art work of Shiva. Nandi is an important piece of Hindu art as he is Shiva’s vehicle and iconic representation of Shiva. His third eye in the center of his forehead represents the deities power against evil and his ability for destruction. He has several ornate carvings of jewels and a saddle which is representative of his Godly nature. Nandi is found at most Hindu temples devoted to Shiva and typically faces in the direction of the deity. He can also be found on the walls of temples in small carvings. These small carvings of the bull are there to watch over and protect the temple.
