Nanxiang Temple Brick Pagodas (also known as the Twin Pagodas of Nanxiang) are a pair of identical seven-story octagonal brick towers dating back to the Five Dynasties or Northern Song period (10th–11th century). Located in Nanxiang Town, Jiading District, these rare surviving examples of Chinese brick pagodas with wooden architectural imitation originally stood at the gate of Nanxiang Temple, which was destroyed by fire in 1766. Despite severe weathering and damage over centuries, they were restored in the 1980s and remain key relics for studying ancient Chinese architecture, religion, and local history. Recognized as a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relic (1962, 1980) and Excellent Historical Building (2017), they now stand as iconic landmarks in Nanxiang’s old town.
