The cortex, vestibular system, GI tract, and chemoreceptor trigger zone send signals to the “vomiting center” in the brainstem, causing contractions of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm, triggering retroperistalsis, and stimulating the autonomic nervous system. A variety of neurotransmitter receptors (muscarinic, dopamine, histamine, neurokinin/substance P, and serotonin) can be found in the organs associated with nausea and vomiting, providing potent drug targets for treatment.
