More model informationThis is a shell from the chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius), known also as the pearly nautilus. The chambered nautilus can be found throughout the Pacific Ocean and inhabits shelf and slope waters near coral reefs with depths up to 750 meters. The shell of the nautilus shows countershading–where the bottom of the shell is light and the top is dark. This is a type of camouflauge that is effective at helping the nautilus blend in with the sea.
