This Frankisch necklace with amethyst beads has a coin placed in the middle. This coin is Roman and displays the most recognisable symbol of Roman itself: the Lupa Capitolina or she-wolf feeding Remus and Romulus, the founders of Rome. The use of amethyst might indicate that trade was still relevant in the early Middle Ages and that Maastricht was an important city. Furthermore, the necklace consists of colored glass beads. The location of the excavation of the necklace may explain the wearers wealth, as the churchyard of the Basilica of Saint Servatius was mainly used for upper class people.
