Nether Largie standing stone, Kilmartin Glen

This monolith is part of an arrangement of standing stones at Nether Largie in Kilmartin Glen, Argyll. The stone is around 2.7 metres high and is located close to a variety of prehistoric monuments, including a Neolithic chambered cairn, Temple Wood stone circle and a Bronze Age cairn cemetery. A radiocarbon date from a comparable monument in Kilmartin Glen suggests that some standing stones in the area may date to the Middle Bronze Age.

One side of the stone displays cup marks, some contained by rings and other joined by lines. In the Kilmartin area, standing stones like this may have been quarried from outcrops, and the markings added at a later date - possibly when they were upright. The cups are often larger than those found carved upon in situ bedrock.
