Part of Newhaven Fort - a Palmerston Fort built between 1864 and 1871to defend Newhaven Harbour against possible invasion by the French navy. The stairs descend to a Caponier at the foot of the cliffs (a Caponier is a type of defensive structure within a fortification). Access cannot be gained to the structure at present, but the route down to it is of interest. Further visits to made to try and extend modelling of tunnel.
