The roofs of temples in those days were covered with a combination of round and flat tiles, with round and flat eaves tiles with patterns on the edges. This tile has a hiunmon (cloud pattern), and this pattern is an image of the flowing cloud, which is related to Buddhism. You can see the lattice patterns on the curved surface of the tile, which are tool marks left when the clay was hammered to make the tile. Shimotsukekokubunji has been renovated several times, and this tile is from the earliest buildings.
