This oak bound book (also known as Paxbread) was produced in the 14th-16th centuries in the town of Southampton, with entries by multiple writers across the period. The book paints a picture of the medieval town, its governance, trading practices and customs. It contains 60 leaves, some of which are damaged or worn, but many of which are still readable.
The cover is on display at Sea City Museum in the Gateway to the World gallery: https://seacitymuseum.co.uk/exhibitions/gateway-to-the-world/ and was found during excavations on Upper Bugle Street in Southampton (SOU 124)
The oak book has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.
