More model informationAn oil lamp made of very thin hammered-iron comes from the Spanish 1564 galleon Santa Clara. The original lamp was completely corroded, but its form was recovered by casting it from the encrustation that formed around the piece while underwater. The pan is 7.3 cm diameter and 2.6 cm deep. It has two lug handles on the sides and a longer, bent handle at the back. Oil was poured into the pan, and one end of a wick placed in it. The wick absorbed oil, and its other end came out from the spout at the front of the piece; it was lit at this outside end. The Spanish call such lamp “candil.”
