This column was created as a part of the Journalism 510 Photogrammetry for Immersive class at the University of Oregon, which takes students through the process of creating models via photographs and working through the production pipeline in preparation for putting the assets in real-time rendering environments.
This architectural model of a cast iron facade detail in Old Town, Portland, was generated using RealityCapture, which produced a model with tens of millions of triangles. A simplifying tool in RealityCapture generated a low-poly mesh of only 3,000 triangles.
This low-poly mesh was ‘UV unwrapped’ in Maya. This low poly model with a tidier UV map was brought back into RealityCapture, where a high-poly texture was reprojected onto the low-poly model.
