More model informationOlive Jar Rim and Shoulder #BAH99-2652. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold water, wine, oil, vinegar, etc. These egg-shaped, wheel-thrown jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 centimeters in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be the galleon Santa Clara of 1564, carried at least 130 olive jars; most broke when the ship wrecked – we only know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This rim has an opening of 6 centimeters at the top edge, an outside diameter of 9 cm, and stands 3.9 cm tall.
