Ornithopod Iguanodontid Dinosaur: Pes and Manus

We found these pes (foot) and manus (hand) footprints near Boulder, Colorado. Thi is the first photogrammetry project from the site.

However, we don’t have any skeletons or body fossils of Iguanodontid dinosaurs discovered in Colorado and it’s hard to assume which species left those footprints. That’s why they are referred to as Iguanodontids (short for Family Iguanodontidae), since we don’t know the genus and species. The tracks could belong to either Iguanodon or Eolambia, both which were large herbivores weighted 1-3 tons.

We can tell that ornithopods were herbivores with their lack of sharp claw impressions, and that they walked in small groups both bipedally and quadrupedally.

Ornithopoda means “bird feet”, from the Greek ornithos (“bird”) and pous (“feet”); this refers to their characteristic three-toed feet.
