A quick and dirty 3d model for a (relatively) cheap Cornell University class ring to 3d print.
Considering the typical alternative is a nice, but generic Balfour ring at +$500, I wanted something that could be truely affordable to all our students so it could really represent them. This guy only costs ~$50 through Shapeways in sterling silver. Just $5 in plastic!
I also wanted something that was more unique to Cornell and my experiences (working at the Lab of Ornithology) so I took Cornell’s mascot the bear and turned it into a derpy owlbear. I took inspiration from my parents’ distinctive “brass rat” class rings from MIT which are custom designed by the students to uniquely represent each graduating class. Since 3d printing has its limitations when it comes to fine details especially in cheaper materials, I kept my design relatively simple compared to the wonderful designs by the MIT guys.
I wanted a non-ostentatious band-style ring, though the owlbear needed to be larger than I originally anticipated.
