The Pappys Lane Shipwreck (PAS0001) – a currently undentified ferrous (likely steel) hulled vessel built in the late 19th or early 20th century which now lies in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina – in the vicinity of Rodanthe, NC.
The vessel was lost sometime between 1964 and c.1970. It is believed to have been hauling limestone road marl at the time of its loss – and has been known as a “gravel barge” ever since. However, the vessel is likely to have had a function before conversion to a barge – and potentially was in use for an extended period of time (which is now being researched).
The model represents our experimentation with drone-based photogrammetry of sites in shallow, murky water. The site is problemmatic to photograph because water levels tend not to be tidal, and water clarity is poor. The drone used was a DJI Phantom Inspire. While over 400 photos were taken, the model only utilized 164 (most photos were of adjacent areas of water). Work will continue on the site in 2017.
