More model informationMeropenem is a B Lactam antibiotic, these partiuclar antibiotics act as ‘suicide’ substrates of transpeptidases which are the enzymes responsible for the final cross linking step of peptidoglycan synthesis, which occurs in the cytoplasm. Peptidoglycan is an important component of bacterial cell walls, and is a great target for meropenem. A nucleophilic attack on the Meropenem carbonyl by either Serine or Cysteine of transpeptidase results in the B Lactam ring opening in the formation of a stable acyl enzyme. As there is an acylation reaction occuring, the reaction is considered irreversible as there is now the strain of the B Lactam ring.
