PETase is an enzyme secreted by Ideonella sakaiensis, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of the plastic polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET), into its soluble components, allowing the bacteria to metabolize these in a form of bioremediation. This tour illustrates the process by which the PETase protein catalyses and enables the breakdown of PET into one of its subunits, MHET.
